VRChat as an emerging curation platform: created for ISEA2024

That’s right, we can think about VRChat not only as social VR and a fun and friendly games platform, but also as a method of art exhibition. A small group of final year students from the ISEA Work integrated learning team (Ben Coles, Nina Phung and Adnan Putras) created an impressive and fully featured VRChat world to exhibit the WebXR/Styly artistic program this ISEA2024. Utilising VRChat, a social VR/multi-player gaming platform, in the context of an emerging technology exhibition, highlights the capacity of social VR to extend in fields other than gaming.

Entrance to Chronoweave ISEA VRChat world, which housed 35 exhibition rooms created on the Styly Platform and linked in a new method using VRChat by final year student Ben Coles (aka Glacetomic).

Each artist created room is linked by a QR Code to the Styly platform, where artists own all their own rooms. This method echoes the truly egalitarian and inclusive approach of ISEA (our ‘client}, which is a vibrant arts community with no membership fees and a large annual conference in it’s 29th year.

Working with the convention of a proscenium, this space has been designed with a live event in mind. The team is planning on an event to coincide with SIGGRAPH Asia Tokyo this December!

Thinking alongside the EveryWhen theme, this image of a giant flower with a rollercoaster tongue, embodies the non-human and draws the natural world into virtual space.
